FLYING CARPET (Moldovan 1990)
FLYING CARPET is a little known daylily hybridized by Steve Moldovan.
I remember seeing it for the first time in an impressive clump at
Iron Gate Gardens almost a decade ago. It's dormant in my garden
with good branching and bud count, which it passes on to its progeny.
I noticed Steve getting some interesting eye patterns from it, so I
too began breeding with it. While I haven't had the best of luck
getting unusual eyezones, it has produced some beautiful flowers,
including chevron patterns.

LIAM
(Flying Carpet X Twilight In Tangiers)
38" MRe 4.75-5"
Liam is a very full, violet colored flower with a faint purple halo. The color is a standout in the garden, always drawing attention. I've gotten some very good results using Liam with Ida's Magic kids (see below). Bud count is moderate at 20. Fertile both ways. A few are available in spring 2004 @ $50.

LILAC EVENING
(Flying Carpet X Twilight In Tangiers)
38" M 5.5
If you want to add height to your program without sacrificing petal width and ruffling, Lilac Evening and its sibling Liam are good choices. I am captivated by the cool, delicate lavender color. The narrow purple halo and faint watermark add further interest to this beautiful flower. Fertile both ways, this is proving to be a good parent for me. This will be available for sale in spring 2005 @ $50

(FLYING CARPET x TWILIGHT IN TANGIERS) X DAVID KIRCHHOFF
Some of these show great vigor, blooming a year ahead of schedule with three-way branching. Flower forms vary greatly from full and round to narrow and pinched. I'm surprised and glad to see red flowers coming out of this cross. Some of these will be future intros. I'm eager to see the seedlings of these kids crossed with the Love In Vain X Bridgeton Brocade siblings.

(FLYING CARPET x TWILIGHT IN TANGIERS) X PEARL HARBOR
These too are vigorous, some blooming a year ahead of schedule. While the David Kirchhoff seedlings show a variety of flower forms, the Pearl Harbor kids are uniformly round, full, and ruffled in shades of pink, lavender, magenta, and cream. Most of these are tall with large flowers - a combination I like. I plan to introduce some of these also. Pearl Harbor takes the Ida's Magic genetics in a different direction with these seedlings.

ARCTIC SNOW X (FLYING CARPET x TWILIGHT IN TANGIERS)
Most from this cross had wide petals in the most beautiful shades of pale lavender. Unfortunately, many of the flowers were on the small side with poor substance. This is the only one to make the grade, a large reblooming 7" purple star with nice ruffles and 43" branched scapes, a real departure from the rest of its siblings. As a clump it has real presence and the color holds fast in the sun. This will be named and available for sale in spring 2005 @ $50.

FLYING CARPET X SEASON'S GREETINGS
During hot temperatures, the eyezones and halos of some of these flowers begin to break up, and likewise, the chevron-patterned seedling only shows this trait during hot weather. These are generally tall and well branched like Flying Carpet, and the chevron-patterened seedling has rebloomed every year.

FLYING CARPET X DESIGNER JEANS
I've kept several siblings from this cross because of their exemplary plant habits that include vigor and well-branched scapes. The flower segments are on the narrow side and flower forms are mostly loose and open. Several are narrower and some have lavender-blue eyes. I've been crossing them with unusual forms.

(FROM THE HEART x (ENCHANTED EMPRESS x PUSHKIN)) X (FLYING CARPET x TWILIGHT IN TANGIERS)
Often, when I consider making a cross, I'll weigh the attributes of a particular plant. Generally, I admire plants either for their genetic or visual strengths, but at times I think about whether or not other breeders are using them. Exploring previously untested plants has provided some successful results and helped develop unique breeding lines. This seedling is not too fancy, but it is a beautiful shade of lavender with a watermark and halo. The Flying Carpet X Twilight In Tangiers siblings have been superb parents for producing lavender and purple.

FLYING CARPET X TWILIGHT IN TANGIERS
I've bloomed about 100 seedlings from this cross and kept a good many, perhaps too many. Although I made the cross several years ago, I continue working with them because they give good results - particularly super branching. Twilight In Tangiers is a Tetra. SVH kid that has been an excellent parent for me. Knowing that Tetra. Siloam Virginia Henson and its kids have produced lavender and purple colors for me and for other breeders, I've used the siblings out of this cross with those colors in mind. These are either dormant or semi-evergreen and strong growers with tall scapes and large flowers. Some from this cross have been named. (See LIAM above.)
